We have a little bet going, and it all started with cheese.
April is a vegan. I, on the other hand, don't think I could really go through with the whole veganism thing. It's not just the meat I'd miss, and I don't think drinking soy milk would really bother me at all. It's cheese. I would miss cheese so much. Ricotta, cheddar, bleu, Swiss, colby jack, pepper jack, mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmesan-- with the exception of American cheese, I love them all (let the snide comments roll). Cheese belongs in pretty much every meal. It could, and possibly should, be its own food group.
Considering my great love affair with the dairy product, I told my sister that there is no way I could be vegan simply because of cheese. So, as any good younger sister might do, April bet me to go a month without it. Naturally, she needs a counter-bet-- no processed foods for all of January. I'm not going to lie, it seemed like I could take this processed foods bet as well, but as it goes: cheese is processed. There's no way to wriggle myself out of eating cheese for a month.
So, as we work out the rules, share recipes, and lament the loss of foods we love, we will post to this blog. Our situations couldn't be more different: she's a vegan; I'm an omnivore (with an obvious dilemma). She's in Denver, Colorado; I'm in State College, Pennsylvania. She's a full-time cosmetologist; I'm a full-time grad student. What we have in common: some genetics, a birthplace, and a passion for eating well-- as in healthy and delicious food.
Can we make it without processed foods (including cheese!) for a whole month?
Welcome to the Bet: January 1, 2010 launch.
